This is our #1 most favorite program for both our families and our community supporters! Each family provides us with a list of all the children under 18 in their household, including name, age, gender, favorite color(s), clothing & shoe sizes, and wish list items, and we pair the family up with another local family, organization, or business who provide gifts for whichever of the December holidays the family celebrates. While wish lists are used mostly as a guide so that the shoppers “get to know” the children for whom they are buying, most are very good about making sure at least some of the wish items are included. In addition, we encourage parents to let us know if there are “needs” rather than simply “wishes”, such as winter outerwear, school supplies, etc. that should be prioritized. We have also been able to fulfill some special, larger wishes for higher end items like computers, tablets, bedroom furniture, bicycles, etc. We can never make promises…but we’re always willing to try.
An email regarding the Adopt-a-Family program goes out mid-to-late October. The sooner a family can provide complete information, the greater the chance that the family will be included. So far, we’ve never had to turn a family away. In 2014 we provided gifts for 275 children with the support of an amazingly generous community!
If you, your family, your group, or your business is interested in sponsoring one or more families this holiday season, please email email@example.com to let us know. If you have participated previously and know how many children you would like to engage for the holidays (or if you’d like the same kids from last year), please include that information in your email. Otherwise, just provide the basics of who you are (individual, group, or business) and how you would most like to be contacted and we’ll be in touch soon!
A favorite way for many businesses participating to undertake this project is with a “Giving Tree”. Purchase a small holiday tree for the office upon which you hang slips of paper with each of the children’s gift requests. As people take down the slips of paper (committing to purchasing that item or something similar), they get to hang an ornament in its place, thus the beauty of holiday giving becomes visible. Some businesses then choose to deliver the fully decorated tree along with the gifts.
We are also always grateful to our Delivery Elves who help with both holiday meals for those who do not have a Jewel Foods Store near them and the delivery of holiday gifts for those individuals and groups who are not able or do not wish to deliver on their own. To sign up as a delivery elf, please email firstname.lastname@example.org with the territory in which you are willing to assist and for which holidays. Thank you!
